Is Boutique Better?
In your quest for the perfect heli-skiing holiday, ask yourself what kind of experience are you after.
We are specialists. We do nothing but small heli-skiing groups. This is all we have done for the last 25 years. Limited perhaps, but we are really proud of it. In 1988 when we started, we were barely a footnote in the large companies’ eyes, as we were the only company doing exclusively small groups. In 2000 we were recognized as being a trend setter, as other companies started popping up referencing the “Great Canadian Heli-Skiing Business Model”. We never thought of it as a business model, it was just what we did. When asked what it is that we do, we coined the term “Boutique Heli-Skiing” giving a nod to the boutique hotels who redefined the hospitality industry with their small, unique, personalized style. It’s a philosophy, rather than a business model, and we still hang our hat on it to this day. Owner Greg &Maaike Porter put it, “We’ve never tried to be the biggest, just the best.”
But what does that mean for you as a guest?
Boutique means personalized service. Our guests range from powder skiing aficionados to first time powder aspirants. Guests come in their own groups or on their own. It is our goal to get to know each guest and deliver the best personalized experience to each one. As we like to say, “Our advantage is not that we have small groups, it is what we can do for each guest in small groups”.
Operationally it means small, agile groups that allow you to move quickly, change plans on the fly, adapt to the group’s abilities and tackle terrain that large groups aren’t able to. This simple feature alone could be the difference between having a good heli-skiing vacation and the trip of a lifetime.
At GCH we operate in small groups of 4, flying in the ultimate heli-skiing machine – the Astar Eurocopter to get you from the lodge to your first run in minutes. Plus, we only have up to 24 guests each day, which allows us to get to know all of our guests and ensures that your experience is kept personalized and intimate (a stark contrast with some of the larger operations that fly 10 or more per helicopter and accommodate up to 120 guests each day).
The boutique experience goes further than the number in a ski group, it also is defined by the fact that there is specialty accommodation included by the provider and a capped number of guests staying at the property and guests skiing the terrain at all times. Our designated heli-ski lodge is a hub of activity in the evening, with all our guests relaxing, dining, laughing, and re-living the stories of the day. In short, this is heli-skiing heaven, where all our guests are aligned in sharing their passion for powder — the experience extends beyond the slopes.
In summary, if someone was to ask what the most important thing to know when booking a heli-skiing trip, the best advice is to book a “boutique heli-skiing” holiday. That will ensure they will get a great heli-skiing holiday. The next best advice is to book at Great Canadian Heli-Skiing. That will ensure a great boutique heli-skiing holiday.
